Objectives

This department works at the interface between Agro.M (students, alumni, teacher/researchers ..) and the world of work. It aims to :

Missions

- Knowledge of the job market and the search for a match between training provided and jobs available.
The Observatory carries out information searches on the job market and regularly informs the student and teaching community and alumni.
In addition it carries out surveys about employment of recent graduates (focussing on the most recent graduates and those of the previous year), following the model put forward by the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles. The aim of this is to find out which sectors graduates are working in, what their role is, what sort of employment contract they have and to help them if they are looking for a job.
Lastly the Observatory regularly sets up ‘sectorial’ surveys in close collaboration with the teachers of specialisations in the school, in order to target the more specific career opportunities for each specialisation ( sectors, job roles, salaries ..) in order to specify the types of jobs and to evaluate the training/job match (knowledge or competences most used or those under developed on the course).
All of this information is shared globally and anonymously with the relevant teachers, students and graduates.

- Careers advice
In the first year students take part in the Job Module and carry out an interview with an alumnus and then present their findings orally. Apart from the communication and interpersonal skills they develop through this exercise, these meetings enable them to evaluate the wide range of jobs open to those completing the agronomy course, to start to think about their future at work, and to understand the importance of the school’s alumni network.
A set of job information sheets is available for students at the school, students in ‘classes préparatoires’ and alumni. During their training at the school, students can receive assistance in their search for and choice of work experience placements, in their choice of options and specialisations, then in their choice of sector or job. This is done through individual interviews, round table discussions or themed days.
Each year at the end of November on Job Day students can hear alumni talking about their jobs and can meet organisations who can help them develop their career. Thanks to the participation of many businesses and representatives from the world of work some practice interviews and some real job interviews (jobs or work experience) take place during the day.

- Assistance in Job search and follow up of alumni
Once they have left the school, alumni can have individual help in order to define their professional profile and their match with the job market in order to give impetus to or to redirect their search for a job: writing a CV, application letters, preparation for interviews etc.. In addition, job surveys enable us to know the individual job status of alumni and to follow their progress.
The Observatory analyses and sends out a number of job offers to alumni looking for a job and to teachers who also help them, via an on-line data-base. The ‘alumni meeting’ a few days before they receive their qualifications in the autumn enables them to obtain a large amount of information about the job market, how to look for a job, and to take part in one or two themed conferences (negotiating an employment contract or salary, preparing interviews..)
The Job and Careers Observatory links with the Alumni association at Agro.M to offer ‘Wednesday Meetings’: interview practice in order to prepare students and alumni for future job interviews. For this a panel made up of a recruitment specialist, an employed alumnus and someone from the Observatory, role-play with the candidate in front of an audience of alumni and students.
Some meetings are also given up to agronomists talking about their work in a relaxed environment, covering their career pathway, and their view of the sector in which they work.

- Creation of partnerships with protagonists from the world of work
The Observatory receives a large number of job offers from partner businesses and recruitment agencies. It arranges meetings between alumni and businesses and recruitment interviews when there are themed days such as the Job Day or when there are round table discussions about jobs. In 2000 a partnership agreement was signed with APEC( Association pour l’Emploi des Cadres: an association for the employment of graduates/managers). We also have a close partnership with APECITA (Association pour l’Emploi des Ingénieurs et Techniciens dans l’Agriculture: an association helping agronomists and agricultural technicians find work).

- The creation of an alumni network
Work is done with UNIA and the Agro.M’s Alumni association in order to participate in the creation of an alumni network which is critical for job search and throughout agronomist’s careers.

Ressources

The Observatory has created and provides some tools for students, alumni and teachers in close collaboration with the library, alumni and teachers at the school (job information sheets, monitoring the job market, job information board, data-base, surveys..)
