Master in Agronomy and Agro-food

M2: Specialisation in Mediterranean and Tropical Horticulture (HortiMet)

- Theme : Crop production, livestock production
- Language : French
- Student Status : Formation continue ou Etudiant étranger
- Course duration : Année entière

Training aims :

The HortiMet specialisation falls under the context of the launch of the Global Horticulture Initiative (GHI) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research’s (CGIAR) “High Value Crops – Fruit & Vegetables” Challenge Programme. It is a response to the need for executives in the horticultural sectors of developing countries that, although these sectors are growing rapidly worldwide, is far from being met by these countries’ human resources.

Developing better performing and better structured horticultural sectors is a necessity. This is particularly true for fruits and vegetables, which provide an opportunity as a source of income, but also because of their potential contribution to populations’ food, health and wellbeing. Needs are high in all sectors, notably in periurban areas where horticulture is a source of wealth and jobs.

Future executives’ skills are extremely multidisciplinary. They are based on the crops’ life cycle and the elaboration of their value, keeping in mind the objective of sustainability because horticultural production systems can potentially have a strong environmental impact.

The HortiMet course examines horticultural sectors in their entirety, at different temporal and spatial scales, and proposes individual sector improvement projects that can include variety improvement, obtaining seeds and plants, production, storage and/or processing, and distribution.

This project relies on knowledge of how markets operate and their feedback loops (standards, specifications), and on the implementation of the system approach (actor coordination, quality construction, for example).

Admission requirement :
- As initial education:
For M1, graduates with three-year higher education degrees (‘Licence’, Bachelor’s) in the biological or agronomic sciences.
For M2, graduates with four-year higher education degrees or greater.

- As continuing education:
People employed in the agricultural production, consulting or environmental sectors may be admitted in the framework of their companies’ training plans or on personal training leave. Validation of experience and the organisation of the classes in credit units make it possible to offer individual training plans adapted to each individual’s situation. The coursework can be completed over a longer period of time if needed.

Registration conditions :
Admissions:
Application forms must be submitted to Montpellier SupAgro’s Education Directorate by 15 June.
Admissions are based on applications, in function of available space.

Career Prospects :
Training very high-level horticultural executives skilled in systemic agronomy, integrated crop protection, and commodity chain economics is a priority.

The HortiMet specialisation’s ambition is to meet this need for academic education, both among young researchers who will work in the fields of new variety selection, agro-ecologic engineering, bioagressor control, product enhancement and local commodity chain economics, and for teacher training, production executives and those in charge of experimentation and advice for professional organisations and private horticultural structures.

Course structure :

The HORTIMET specialisation is co-accredited by Montpellier SupAgro and the INH Angers, and combines their respective skills. It calls heavily on contributions from researchers (from CIRAD and INRA notably) involved in horticultural development programmes in tropical and Mediterranean countries. The complementary nature of the Avignon-Montpellier and Angers-Nantes centres is very favourable for this research support. Presentations by professionals in horticultural sectors are also planned (visits, study voyages).
The M1 curriculum, shared by the various specialisations in the “Agronomy – Agrifood” Master’s, includes skills upgrading, an internship on a farm or in a small business, agricultural systems analysis, training in scientific reasoning, and a bibliographic summary. The second semester in M1 is based on a series of optional teaching units (at SupAgro) chosen by students with the aid of their tutors.
The HortiMet specialisation itself (M2) contains 9 teaching units (TUs) and ongoing activities (individual project) that lead to the defence of a thesis presented before a multidisciplinary jury. At the start of M2, introductory conferences present the stakes of sustainable development in the agricultural sector and the challenges of technical and organisational innovation in this context. The course ends with the 5- to 6-month end-of-study internship in a professional organisation, business or research unit (in France or abroad), a report on which is presented orally before a jury.
